Bobtail/Deadhead Coverage
Bobtail/Deadhead Insurance Overview
The term “deadhead” is used to describe the operation of a truck-tractor with an empty trailer attached. On the other hand, “bobtail” refers to the non-business activities of operating a truck-tractor without a trailer attached. When it comes to “deadhead,” it involves a truck-tractor pulling an empty trailer during non-business activities.
This coverage provides protection against bodily injury or property damage that may occur while operating a power unit without an attached trailer. It is commonly required for those engaged in power-only operations or hauling under someone else’s authority. While some clients may request this coverage, it is specifically intended for moving power-only units or using the unit for personal purposes.
Additional Coverage Considerations
To illustrate, let’s consider a scenario where a trucker completes a delivery route that takes them out of state, leaving the trailer behind. In order to return to their home station, they have to travel a long distance without a trailer attached and without any merchandise. This situation is commonly referred to as bobtailing.
*It is mandatory to obtain physical damage coverage in addition to Bobtail/Deadhead coverage.
